When is the end of the world? I was asked that question at a party, by people who knew I was a believer. Cults like the Jehovah Witnesses and men like Harold Camping do us no favours.
How would I know when time is up? Jesus said it was not for us to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. Acts 1:7
I didn’t want to brush them off either. Put on the spot, I hunted through my mind for what I’d read in the Bible.
Asked the same questions by the disciples, Jesus gave them a description of events that would happen at the times of the end. You can read it in Matthew 24. But he compacted 2,000 years into his answer, from the destruction of the Jewish temple in AD70 until the present day. And he covered two groups – the nation of Israel, and the Church he would begin at Pentecost, fifty days after his resurrection. So you have to be mindful of that.
“Watch what happens with the nation of Israel,” I answered, knowing that Israel proves Bible prophecy.
Did you know that the fig tree represents the nation of Israel? That’s why it was cursed for not having any fruit. Matthew 21:18-22
Jesus summed up his description of end times events by saying “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.” Mathew 24:32-34
Cursed and cut down until 1948, the fig tree revived when Israel came back to its land and became a nation again. The end times Jesus spoke about are here with the rebirth of that tree, the nation of Israel.
